Sam and Danita Elrod opened Elrod Garden Center in 1988 to serve homeowners, farmers and landscaping professionals as a wholesale and retail nursery specializing in annuals, perennials and herbs. |
| | |
Most of the plants are grown locally and are already acclimated to the climate and transition well. The Elrod’s prides themselves on their extensive knowledge as to what and how plants frown in Paulding. Products carried include sod, grass and vegetable seed, fertilizer, animal feed, plants, trees, mulch, soils both bulk and bagged, bird and deer feed and gravel. Elrod Garden Center also offers a selection of Carhart clothing, propane, corrugated pipe, erosion control products, local honey, lawn and garden chemicals and Allen block and pavestone products. The No-till drill is also available for planting of large acreages.
The Elrod’s are both lifelong Paulding residents with two boys that excelled in the Paulding County School system with one graduating from Georgia Tech and the other graduating from Berry College and currently enrolled at University of Virginia. Elrod Garden Center could not have been in a better place than Paulding County. The company has grown with the County and built relationships that have kept them viable during the floods, the drought and while the nursery industry nationwide has suffered from this lasting recession. They are very active in Rotary, the Paulding County Chamber, Chattahoochee Tech, the Extension Services, Local Farmers Markets, and other causes that are dear to their heart. Sam and Danita are honored to be a part of this community and are striving to set a course that meets the needs of Paulding County.
Please visit Elrod Garden Center at 260 Merchants Drive in Dallas, one block from the Dallas Post Office, or on their website at www.elrodsgardencenter.com to sign up for email specials or join their
Facebook page. Sam and Danita can be contacted at 770/445-4488 or sam@elrodgardencenter.com and Danita@elrodgardencenter.com. |

To bring opportunities for our partners to work with our students in meaningful ways and to deliver opportunities for our students to investigate career readiness skills, the Paulding County School District has partnered with Junior Achievement. Junior Achievement (JA) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating students about financial literacy, workforce readiness, and entrepreneurship through experiential, hands-on programs.
As a part of our partnership, we will work to bring JA programs to our elementary, middle and high school students. We are currently recruiting community volunteers to facilitate pre-designed curriculum in our middle schools. |
| | The middle school community volunteers are provided with turnkey materials necessary to teach a class, including lesson plan guides, engaging activities, and fun posters. JA will train our community volunteers on how to use the materials and how to lead a class. We will connect you with a teacher in your area who has requested a community partner. You and the teacher are then provided the flexibility to determine your visitation schedule. The teacher will always remain in the classroom to support you throughout the session. Your time commitment would be a one hour training session and six 45 minute sessions. If you are interested, please contact Susan Browning at sbrowning@paulding.k12.ga.us. She looks forward to helping you give back to your community, strengthening our education system, and building strong global professionals. | |

| Ambassador Spotlight |
Linda Verscharen is passionate about thriving children, healthy families, drug-free homes, and most especially Paulding County, Georgia. Linda is a visionary, a go getter, and doesn’t accept the word “no”. Co-founder in 2005 and Executive Director since 2006 of the Family Alliance of Paulding, Inc. formerly known as the Meth Alliance of Paulding, Linda works tirelessly to educate the leadership of Paulding County about the devastation leveled on individuals, families, and the entire community by methamphetamine addiction.
She has a medical back ground in pediatrics and pre-natal education. She has held positions as school health nurse and case manager for Paulding County. Linda has been conducting educational trainings and seminars in Meth 101 and prevention across the state for the last 6 years. Her audience has included school administrators, teachers and students, professionals, law enforcement, health professionals and the faith based community.
Linda is recognized state-wide as an expert on methamphetamines. She has been active in the Georgia Drug Endangered Children collaborative since its inception and has been asked to train community groups across Georgia. When the Georgia Meth Project became active, Linda Verscharen and the Meth Alliance of Paulding were one of the first community alliances contacted by state leadership to be involved in this prevention effort.
Never letting up, Linda and the Meth Alliance board of directors recognized a greater need by Paulding County families. When Juvenile Court Judge Sandra W. Miller called together the Paulding County Family Connection Children’s Cabinet, Linda responded enthusiastically. A number of needs rose to the top of the list created by this body of child and family serving agencies and organizations. The one most urgently felt was a supervised visitation center. Without a building to house it in, volunteers or staff to run it, or furnishings or budget to fund it, Linda Verscharen took on the task.
With divine inspiration, a whole lot of prayer, and connections across Paulding County and the state, Linda, along with a lot of help from the City of Hiram and Mayor Carmen Rollins, pulled together everything required to begin this service to at-risk Paulding County families. Completing its second year of operation, the Welcome Home Supervised Visitation Center provides more than 30 supervised family visits weekly to more than 20 families.
Linda’s community involvement does not end with the work of the Family Alliance of Paulding, Inc. She was instrumental in the planning of the 2010 Paulding County Public Service Appreciation Day. She is always involved in City of Hiram events including Olde Town Hiram Day, the 4th of July celebration, the Christmas Tree Lighting and various other annual events.
Linda is a graduate of the Paulding Chamber of Commerce Leadership Paulding program and serves as a host to the following classes of this program as well as serving as the Chairman of the Ambassador program with the Paulding Chamber of Commerce. Linda and the Family Alliance of Paulding, Inc. received a Federal grant to expand the capacity of the Family Alliance as one of 25 non-profit organizations in the 2010 Safe House Outreach Learning Community.
The Family Alliance of Paulding, Inc. is not the only non-profit vision acted upon by Linda. She created and directed First Steps Paulding, an organization that provided hospital visits to new Paulding County moms at Wellstar Cobb and Kennestone hospitals. This program was so successful in its first year that Wellstar took over these visits. Linda was also very involved with Prevent Child Abuse Paulding, serving as its president from 2003 to 2006.
Linda is a native of Pennsylvania but don’t call her a Yankee. She is committed to her Southern home. She and her husband Mark have two grown children, Donnie and Jackie; and Linda is “DeDe to sweet Lilly. GO STEELERS!!! |

After meeting with several principals on an individual basis we were able to design a plan to support the unique needs of each school by pinpointing ways to cater to the students as well as faculty/staff members. Some of our plans to participate within the schools this year are highlighted below: |
|
| | | Fire Safety (Elementary Schools) Stress Management (Staff and Seniors before AP Testing) Crash Cars placed at schools throughout prom season Identity Fraud (Staff and Seniors) Assistance with School Supply Fundraisers Bike Safety (Elementary Schools) Perfect Attendance Celebration Internet Safety (PTA)
As one of the nation’s largest personal lines insurance companies, Liberty Mutual is able to offer all Paulding County School District employees’ exclusive discounts on Home, Auto, Motorcycle, Umbrella, and Life Insurance Products. Since the inception of the partnership between PCSD and Liberty Mutual, 132 families have reaped the benefits of premium savings and/or enhanced
coverage by switching to Liberty Mutual. There has been a lot of positive feedback from those who took the opportunity to get a quote from their Liberty Mutual Community Representative. Faculty and staff like having a local person to approach regarding their insurance needs even if they remain with their current insurance company.
Our team of community representatives consists of Megan Weldon, Ashley Thomas, Kimberly Hicks, Ella Ford, and Daniel Woods. If you have not met one on one with your assigned representative please feel free to contact Megan Weldon at 770-974-0272 (ext. 58696) or Megan.Weldon@LibertyMutual.com to schedule your meeting. We look forward to another year of serving PCSD. | | | |
